Linnaeus, Carolus
Linné och hans lärjungar. [After Brusewitz]
[Halmstad], Svenska Familj-Journalens Förlag, [1897]. Oblong sheet (33.6 x 40.6 cm) with full colour mezzotint plate (27.0 x 35.5 cm), and printed caption. = This coloured mezzotint is a copy of an oil painting by the Swedish painter Gustaf Henrik Brusewitz (1812-1899). Brusewitz painted this allegorical piece in 1866. It shows Linnaeus in a Swedish summer landscape, surrounded by his students, with Linnaeus holding a flowering plant in his left hand. The number of disciples - twelve - does not seem to be coincidental. A printed caption state that it was published by the Swenska [SIC: Svenska] Familj-Journalens Förlag. It is not dated but probably it was published in 1897. This print also exists in an uncoloured version, known to be published in that year. Closed tear in the upper margin, with some additional blank stickers on the plate verso. Otherwise very good. Not in Soulsby (Soulsby, 3219 has an identical description, but, being dated 1863, cannot be the same).

Linnaeus, Carolus
[Portrait of Linnaeus in Lapland costume]
Edinburgh, W. H. Lizars, 1833. 8vo-size (16.5 x 10.5 cm). Engraved by Lizars. Disbound. = This engraving, made for William Jardine's 'Naturalist's Library', shows Linnaeus when he was 25 years old, dressed in his Lapland costume. Beneath the portrait is a facsimile of Linnaeus's autograph. The artist was Jardine's brother-in-law, the Scottish engraver and publisher William Home Lizars (1788-1859). It was published as frontispiece to ornithology volume VI of the Naturalist's Library series, being the first volume on hummingbirds, but including a memoir of Linnaeus. Some very light spotting, otherwise a very good copy. Soulsby, 3186.

Caroli Linnaei Opera varia in quibus continentur Fundamenta botanica, Sponsalia plantarum, et Systema Naturae, in quo proponuntur Naturae regna tria secundum Classes, Ordines, Genera & Species.
"Fundamenta botanica is a reprint of the second edition (1740); the Sponsalia plantarum of the 1746 edition. The Systema naturae is a reprint with slight alterations of the fourth editon, Paris 1744" (cfr. Stafleu). Qualche lieve ed uniforme brunitura č dovuta alla qualitą della carta, ma lo stato di conservazione č eccellente. Ampli i margini. Pubblicazione davvero rara. Pritzel, 5405; Hulth, Bibliographia linnaeana, partie I, livraison, I, p. 111.
